Washington’s latest Foreign Military Sale of precision guidance kits (PGKs) enhances Danish defence and supports the Nato alliance.

The US State Department has approved an arms sale to Denmark. The deal, valued at approximately $85m (DKr577m), will transfer up to 5,832 M1156 precision guidance kits and associated support services to the Danish military. This sale underlines the growing military cooperation between the US and its Nato allies.

The approved sale includes the PGKs and ancillary components such as compatibility testing, technical assistance, and new equipment training. These elements enhance Denmark’s ability to address contemporary and future security challenges.

The move is part of the broader effort to reinforce Denmark’s defence capabilities amid evolving European security dynamics. Denmark aims to bolster its position and contribute more effectively to regional stability by improving first-strike accuracy.

The proposed sale, facilitated by Northrop Grumman, a defence contractor, reflects the US’s ongoing commitment to supporting its allies.

Northrop Grumman’s Precision Guidance Kit (PGK) has improved 155mm artillery by transforming conventional rounds into GPS-guided precision weapons. As adversaries developed jamming technologies to counter these capabilities, Northrop Grumman responded by enhancing the PGK to maintain functionality even in GPS-degraded environments.

The latest iteration, PGK-Extended Range (PGK-ER), is designed to work with existing and future artillery systems, including the US Army’s new high-velocity cannons.

This approval clearly indicates the strengthening of defence ties between Denmark and the United States, which aligns with broader foreign policy and national security objectives to ensure a stable and secure European environment.

Ukraine is set to receive 18 Bohdana 155mm artillery systems, funded by Denmark, within the coming months. This will mark a milestone as Denmark becomes the first Nato country to directly finance Ukrainian arms production.
