AM Power Systems was formed in 2006 as a supplier of specialty high-voltage, low-power conversion products. The initial product line consisted of the THUNDER family of high-voltage DC-DC converters, which have an input voltage range (Vin) of 3V to 24V and an output voltage range (Vout) of 500V to 5.5KV.
Piezo-electric actuator power supplies
In 2009, AM Power Systems introduced a family of piezo-electric actuator power supplies for various miniature and micro-valve applications. These parts (AMC0212-1PE and AM0612-3PE) have a Vin range of 3V-10V and Vout of 200V or 600V. New models for this product line are currently in production.
High-volume custom DC-DC power conversion
AM Power Systems specializes in high-volume custom DC-DC power conversion products. We also manufacture solar charging units for electric vehicles powered by standard sealed lead-acid batteries (SLA batteries) with 12V to 72V battery packs, specifically for the alternative energy power-conversion markets. The solar power converters (SPCs) handle solar-panel power inputs from 50W to 450W.
Custom wind-turbine power converters
Other designs include >1kW and 3kW custom wind-turbine power converters for 24V and 48V charging systems.
Solar-power chargers for electronic accessories
The newest solar products (AMGPS-1W and AMGPS-2W) introduced are 1W and 2W devices to charge a variety of electronic accessories, including GPS units for tracking and surveillance needs by hunters, hikers, campers, etc. Other custom designs will be considered.
Low-power solar-charging power units
AM Power Systems has introduced a family of low-power solar-charging units for 1W and 2W applications. The solar panel, batteries and associated electronics are in an easily mountable, aluminum-framed unit for power generation and storage. The units include two rechargeable nickel-metal hydride AA type batteries for the power storage capability. The units have flying leads for easy hook-up to the customer’s equipment.
Potential applications include GPS directional navigational devices used by hunters, hikers, campers and outdoor personnel, and vehicle and personnel tracking applications. The initial design was for usage by golfers wanting to know ‘distance to the hole’ readings on USGA regulation golf courses, using features now available on many Garmin GPS units available for that application.
The first model scheduled for full production during the first quarter of 2010 is the AMGPS-1W; small volumes are available now. The next model to be introduced will be the AMGPS-2W, late in the second quarter of 2010.
The advantages of low-power solar-charging power units compared to standard solar panels are shown below:
- Standard solar panel Vout (under load) 7V; (without load) 8.75V
- AMGPS-1W Vout (under load) 3V (±5%); (without load) 3V (±5%)
- Standard solar panel output current (under load) 0.15A; (without load) 0.19A with short-circuit
- AMGPS-1W output current (under load) 0.25A (maximum)
