Marine Lance Cpl Brandon Torres, assigned to Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force South, describes the usage of portable water purification equipment to Peruvian sailors during a tour of future amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6).
America is currently travelling through the US Southern Command and US 4th Fleet area of responsibility on her maiden transit, ‘America Visits the Americas.’
The ship is the first of its class, replacing the Tarawa-class of amphibious assault ships.
As the next generation ‘big-deck’ amphibious assault ship, America is optimised for aviation and capable of supporting current and future aircraft, such as the MV-22 Osprey and F-35B Joint Strike Fighter.
The ship is scheduled to be ceremoniously commissioned 11 Oct in San Francisco.
