Saab has agreed to integrate ICEYE’s advanced Synthetic-Aperture Radar (SAR) technology solutions into its defence command and control systems (C2).
SAR is an imaging technique that generates high-resolution images by using radar pulses, which can penetrate through clouds and darkness.
By sending discrete radar pulses from an antenna and processing the echoes, SAR can produce detailed images of the Earth’s surface.
The cooperation is designed to deliver benefits to customers by combining ICEYE’s capabilities in situational awareness, long-range targeting, and enhanced tactical decision-making with Saab’s C2.
ICEYE CSO and co-founder Pekka Laurila said: “It is crucial to remain one step ahead and effective situational awareness is a key tenet of this. We are bringing together cutting-edge SAR technology from ICEYE, and the finest C2 systems from Saab, to look at new and improved ways to maintain the advantage through enhanced situational awareness, leading to better surveillance and protection.”
The memorandum of understanding’s initial phase will explore and demonstrate how this integration can support multi-domain operations.
These capabilities are claimed to be crucial for both civilian and military authorities, offering valuable insights during peacetime, the grey zone, or conflict. The integration is set to provide critical infrastructure protection.
Saab business area Surveillance senior vice president and head Carl-Johan Bergholm said: “Saab’s integration with ICEYE data will provide real-time, high-resolution imagery through clouds and darkness, enabling comprehensive surveillance and reconnaissance for faster, even more informed decisions, in complex operational environments.”
This partnership announcement follows an exclusive interview with Andy Challen from ICEYE, where he highlighted the depth of detail SAR imagery provides for areas of strategic interest on the ground.
