The Spanish Ministry of Defence (MoD) has reached a milestone in the High-Performance Tactical Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (SIRTAP) programme.
Following a successful critical design review in June 2024, the programme is on track, with the inaugural prototype and maiden flight anticipated in 2025.
This event will mark the first instance of a Class II/III military aeronautical system being fully developed within Spain.
In December 2023, Airbus entered into an agreement with the Spanish MoD to develop and supply the SIRTAP system.
The agreement with Airbus covers the provision of nine SIRTAP systems, which include three uncrewed aerial vehicles and a ground control station. Additionally, two simulators will be supplied to support the training of the Spanish Armed Forces.
Measuring 7.3 metres (m) in length, nearly 2.5m in height, and has a wingspan of 11.3m, with a range surpassing 2,000km, the uncrewed aerial system is poised to enhance the tactical capabilities of the Army, Air Force, and Space Force.

The SIRTAP is equipped with an ice protection system and can withstand temperature ranges from -40°C to +50°C, ensuring operability in all weather conditions.
It has an endurance exceeding 20 hours, an operational altitude above 20,000 feet, and the capacity to integrate dual payloads, such as an electro-optical turret and a multi-mission radar.
The procurement plan includes nine systems, each comprising three uncrewed aircraft and a ground control station, along with two simulators.
The initial delivery, featuring one system set and a simulator, is slated for 2026.
Serial production is set to commence in the following year, with the project reaching full development by 2030.
Manufacturing and assembly of all aircraft will take place at the Airbus Defence Space facility in Getafe, Madrid.
This initiative will also benefit a multitude of Spanish companies participating in the Industrial Participation Plan.
