By GlobalDataIn a statement, Slovakian Prime Minister Eduard Heger confirmed the delivery following a request from the Ukrainian authorities.
According to a Reuters report, Slovakia has been operating one battery of the S-300 air defence system since 1993, following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia.
Prime Minister Heger said: “I can confirm that Slovakia donated the S-300 air defence system to Ukraine, based on its request to help in self-defence due to armed aggression from the Russian Federation.”
US Secretary of Defence Lloyd J Austin III appreciated the Slovak Government’s decision.
He said: “It’s a strong testament to how determined Ukraine’s neighbours are to help the Ukrainians defend themselves against Russia’s unprovoked invasion of their homeland.
“We also recognise Slovakia for its extraordinary humanitarian assistance efforts, and for hosting thousands of Ukrainian refugees.”
A US Department of Defense (DoD) statement said that the US European Command will send one Patriot missile system to match the S-300 donation.
The new system will be manned by US service members and is expected to arrive in the coming days.
Last month, Nato partners Germany and the Netherlands deployed three batteries of the Patriot air defence system to Slovakia.
The Government of Australia announced that it will send 20 Bushmaster protected mobility vehicles to Ukraine. The donation will include two ambulance variants.
The UK also announced a new £100m military package for Ukraine.
The package will comprise more than 800 additional NLAW anti-tank missiles, additional Javelin anti-tank systems, Starstreak air defence systems, munitions, and other non-lethal aid such as ballistic helmets, body armour, and night vision goggles.
