Galleon Embedded Computing (Galleon) develops high-performance, high-quality storage solutions, small rugged data recorder systems, servers and network-attached storage (NAS) devices for deployed systems in adverse military environments.
Galleon’s products are used worldwide in a wide range of applications, including airborne, ground-based or remotely operated vehicles, demanding sensor data recording, high-density removable storage, and network-attached storage (NAS) servers.
Removable high-density data storage modules
Galleon’s rugged data recorders provide removable data modules (RDM). The RDM combines several 2.5in solid state drives (SSD) modules, used as a redundant array of independent disks (RAID) array, providing capacities up to 40TB in a single RDM.
The RDM has proven sustained data write and read bandwidths in excess of 1,000Mb/s.
Open architecture design for long-term defence projects
Galleon’s products are designed using a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) open architecture philosophy.
Using COTS modules for the central processing unit (CPU), input / output (I/O) interfaces, and other elements of the design allows us to keep track of new technology developments and provide obsolescence management mitigation strategies for long-term project requirements.
Rugged data recorders for interface use
Galleon’s XSR is a standalone data recorder that can be configured to include a wide range of interfaces such as 8x 3G/HD-SDI video inputs, 13x Gb ethernet inputs, 8x 10Gb ethernet and 8x serial front panel data port (SFPFP) interfaces, some of which are mutually exclusive.
Specific I/O interfaces, including avionic databuses (1553/A429), CanBus, analog videos and others can also be added to the system by using mini-PCIe and XMC modules to enhance the I/O capability of the unit.
The XSR includes an integrated CPU module, providing many different intel processor options (Intel Core i7 or Xeon E3). This allows the XSR to be used either as a recorder or server platform for general purpose processing requirements.
The XSR product line is available in several different formats, including conduction, convection and forced air-cooled configurations, allowing the XSR to meet a wide range of user scenarios.
All XSR products have been qualified to MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-461 and DO-160 environmental requirements.
Rugged micro recorders for data recording
Galleon’s G1 Rugged MicroRecorder uses the same modular design principles as the XSR, but due to the smaller physical size of the unit, limited I/O capability is available.
Up to 4GbE interfaces are supported in the initial release of the product, with more interfaces in development. The high-bandwidth I/O can be enhanced by using a range of mini-PCIe cards to add specific I/O requirements.
The G1 also provides an RDM with a maximum capacity of 20TB. The SSDs are configured as a RAID array and can sustain bandwidth to and from the disks at approximately 500Mb/s.
Video compression engines for high-resolution images
The XSR family of products and G1 Data Recorders all support H.264 video compression.
The user has the ability of opting whether this is turned on or off, and can choose if this is used on all input channels or on a select number of channels.
The H.264 engine settings can also be set to provide a lossless compression of the inputs, which will reduce the overall compression ratio, but allow for high-resolution images to be retained / recovered from the RDM.
Both the XSR and G1 micro offer a powerful computing platform, combined with the same storage capacity and bandwidths provided by the recorder products.
Control panel for HMI applications via serial type interface
Galleon provides a control panel (CP50) for applications that require direct (cockpit) human machine interface (HMI) input to start / stop recording, event marking, fast-forward (FFWD) / rewind (RWD), playback, and compression on / off.
The CP50 interfaces to the XSR and G1 via a serial type interface.
