US Navy aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt is preparing to return to sea after a deap-clean and the quarantine of its crew. The ship has been docked in Guam since cases were detected onboard.
More than 4,000 sailors who have tested negative for Covid-19 will re-embark after spending two weeks in quarantine in hotels on the island.
US Naval Hospital Guam Commanding Officer Captain Maria Young said: “Our mission is to make sure the fighting force in the fleet is ready to go at all times.
“I appreciated the Sailors’ patience throughout this whole process, as we worked with one another to maintain the health and readiness of the crew and to get the Roosevelt back to sea. We are happy to help.”
Cases of Covid-19 onboard the carrier lead to the firing of its commanding officer and later the resignation of Acting Secretary of Navy Thomas Modly. Modly resigned after criticism the ships CO, after a letter was leaked to the press calling on the Navy to do more to support the ship.
