The US Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Corona Division has designed portable oxygen manifolds for Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. The low-cost device was designed at the request of Combat Logistics Regiment 15 (CLR-15) Marines. It is mass-producible and features multiple flow rate valves and eight outputs. Using the device, eight patients can be provided with oxygen at the same time from a single oxygen cylinder. The manufacture of around 20 portable medical oxygen manifolds is estimated to cost about $375.
Boeing has restarted production at its Philadelphia facility in Ridley Township on 20 April. The company has resumed work on operations that are considered essential. The reopening follows a two-week suspension to support efforts to fight the spread of Covid-19. During the suspension period, the company implemented several enhanced safety measures such as use of masks or face coverings in the workplace, no-touch temperature screening, shift times adjustments, physical distancing and more.
Defence technology provider L3Harris Technologies has made its communication service, BeOn software app, available for free for 90 days to healthcare, public safety workers and agencies responding to Covid-19. The application is designed to transform smartphones, laptops and other devices into an encrypted public safety radio. This will allow for quick connection and communication for individuals or large groups. The technology safeguards critical information and eliminates sharing of large inventories of radios. It also does not require sanitisation.
CAE, a defence contractor, is recalling all of its 1,500 Canada-based temporarily laid-off employees back on the payroll this week. Most of them are located in Montreal and will begin working from home. Also, the company has been contracted by the Canadian Government to deliver 10,000 units of CAE Air1 ventilator. The system is under final stages of design and testing. Furthermore, the company has sourced 100,000 N95 masks for delivery to the Quebec Government to support frontline healthcare workers.
