Understand the impact of the Ukraine conflict from a cross-sector perspective with the Global Data Executive Briefing: Ukraine Conflict
The Novator armoured personnel carrier (APC) is a modern light armoured vehicle designed and manufactured by Ukrainian Armor, a Ukraine-based producer of defence vehicles.
The armoured vehicle can operate in difficult off-road conditions and perform multiple missions, including patrolling, special operations, search and detention of criminals and transportation of wounded people.
The APC can be transformed into different platforms such as command and staff car, carrier vehicle, transport-combat machine, and special forces combat vehicle, based on the requirement of armed forces.
The Novator APC was exhibited during the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in February 2019.
It was also demonstrated during Three Swords 2021, a multinational military exercise, in July 2021. The exercise was held at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center of the Hetman Petro Sahaidachny National Academy of Land Forces in Lviv, Ukraine.
Novator APC development details
The armoured vehicle passed departmental tests of the state border service of Ukraine and the first stage of the national tests in December 2019.
It underwent firing tests at the 169th training centre Desna of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in November 2019. The tests included firing exercises using a 12.7mm machine gun and tank testing in tough off-road conditions.
Ukrainian Armor unveiled a civilian variant of the Novator APC in November 2019. The civilian version matches its military counterpart and the company intends to invest the revenue generated from the variant’s sales into the development and production of new models of weapons and military equipment.
Orders and deliveries
Ukrainian Armor delivered the third batch of Novator armoured vehicles to the National Guard of Ukraine under the state contract in February 2021.
The company supplied a consignment of specialised Novator armoured vehicles to the National Guard of Ukraine in March 2020.
In May 2020, an additional Novator APC was supplied to the National Guard free of charge as the company managed to achieve cost reductions under the state contract.
The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine received a batch of Novator armoured vehicles from Ukrainian Armor in November 2019.
Design and features
The Novator APC is based on a Ford F-550 4×4 chassis and measures 6.4m-long, 2.35m-wide, and 2.38m-high. It has a wheelbase of 3.6m and offers a ground clearance of 300mm.
The gross vehicle weight (GVW) of the APC is 8,845kg while its maximum payload capacity and maximum combat weight are 1,845kg and 7,945kg, respectively.
The APCs are equipped with a radio station, night-vision devices, an automatic fire extinguishing system, a special video recorder, and a semi-automatic tire pumping system.
The APC has the capacity to accommodate five personnel in its reconnaissance configuration and can transport eight to ten occupants in the configuration meant for transporting personnel. Its door mechanism enables the power-locking of heavy-duty doors weighing up to 300kg.
Armament and self-protection of the Novator APC
The Novator APC can be installed with the Iva combat module mounting a 12.7mm calibre machine gun. The vehicle has five gun ports and a provision for installing a powder gases ventilation system.
A multi-layer bulletproof glass with an additional anti-spall layer provides increased protection to the crew. External mounting helps in providing more space inside the vehicle.
The armoured vehicle can withstand the impact of 7.62mm gunfire from an SVD rifle and the blast from two RGD-5 type hand grenades.
Engine and mobility of Novator armoured vehicle
The APC is powered by a Ford V8 Super turbo diesel engine, which generates a maximum power output of 300hp and a maximum torque of 996Nm. The engine is coupled to a six-speed automatic gearbox.
The vehicle has a maximum speed of 140km/h on-road, while its range on rough terrains and highways is more than 500km and 1,100km, respectively.
The APC is equipped with electric shock protection and a waterproof winch with a 25m-long steel cable. The winch offers a towing capacity of 7t and can be installed with a set of pulley blocks to increase traction.
Rubber run-flat tires enable the vehicle to travel up to 50km off-road, after a sudden loss of tire inflation pressure.
The vehicle can cross water obstacles with a 0.75m depth and negotiate gradient and side slopes of 30° and 20°, respectively.
The multi-purpose mobile platform can operate in different climatic conditions with temperatures varying between -40°C and 50°C.
