Notably, the number of artificial intelligence-related patent applications in the aerospace, defence & security industry was 382 in Q3 2024, versus 758 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 24% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Boeing filed the most artificial intelligence patents within the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 33 artificial intelligence-related patents in the quarter, compared with 32 in the previous quarter. It was followed by BAE Systems with 20 artificial intelligence patent filings, RTX (17 filings), and Safran (11 filings) in Q3 2024.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 45% share of total patent filings

The largest share of artificial intelligence related patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q3 2024 was in the US with 45%, followed by China (10%) and the UK (3%). The share represented by the US was 22% higher than the 23% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
