Rohde & Schwarz elevates Germany’s defence with communication tech

The company has already delivered several communication devices tailored to various German military operational platforms.

Munich-based Rohde & Schwarz, a wireless and secure communications provider, takes a role in the Digitalisation of Land-Based Operations (D-LBO) programme for the German armed forces.

The long-term agreement aligns with Germany's focus on digital sovereignty, information security, and system reliability.

The Munich-based technology company referred to for its wireless, jam-resistant, and secure communication systems, signed an agreement at the end of 2022 to supply a digital combat net radio (CNR) family.

This strategic move solidifies Rohde & Schwarz's position in supporting the German armed forces' mission to enhance digital sovereignty. The company has already delivered several communication devices tailored to various German military operational platforms.

In 2017, Rohde & Schwarz secured a contract to supply the German Armed Forces with the SVFuA joint communications system, utilising software-defined radio solutions. The SVFuA was installed on 50 command vehicles, including PUMA infantry fighting vehicles and BOXER armoured transport vehicles, as part of the mobile tactical communications (MoTaKo) program.

The CNR system, a cornerstone of the Digitalization of Land-Based Operations initiative, builds upon the Joint Service Interoperable Radio Equipment explicitly developed for the German armed forces. Operating in synergy with the Bundeswehr's national waveforms, the CNR attempts to ensure secure, jam-resistant networking while maintaining interoperability with the ESSOR waveform across Europe.

Peter Riedel, president and COO of Rohde & Schwarz, expressed his satisfaction with the federal government's trust in the company, "We are very pleased that the federal government has placed its trust in our company. We now have the privilege of continuing this long and trustful collaboration by providing state-of-the-art communications technology to ensure and maintain digital sovereignty for the German armed forces."

Rohde & Schwarz secured a role in enhancing Germany's naval capabilities through two major contracts. In the first agreement, the Munich-based tech firm will deliver its modular R&S KORA systems for integration onto the new German Navy F126 frigates, amplifying situational awareness by intercepting and analysing radar emissions and communications transmissions.

Simultaneously, Rohde & Schwarz continued its support for the German Navy by equipping NH90 Multi-Role Frigate Helicopters with its SOVERON family airborne radios in a deal addressing the specific needs of the naval variant of NH90.

Emerging threats are reviving interest in advanced materials (AdMs)

Investment in AdMs has remained relatively constant due to its ubiquity in the defense sector, however, the emergence of new applications for AdMs and new threats such as hypersonic weapons are driving a global reevaluation of the importance of AdMs to military modernization efforts.

Analyzing the role of IoT in defense

The applications of IoT in defense are wide-ranging and include health monitoring, AR remote training, gaining situational awareness using drones, vehicle management, target recognition, and many more. For instance, smart sensors can be used on military equipment to give data on their health and whether maintenance is needed. This helps reduce operating costs and downtime for military equipment.
