The US Department of Defense has awarded Raytheon Missiles and Defense a contract to produce the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense System (LTAMDS) for the US and Poland.

Raytheon Missiles and Defense, based in Andover, Massachusetts, won a $2.1bn fixed-price-incentive contract for the LTAMDS.

The contract involves low-rate initial production which is intended to be conducted in Raytheon’s Andover facilities, with an anticipated completion date of November 30, 2028.

This deal is notable for its implications beyond US borders. A substantial portion of the contract, totalling almost $816m is funded through the Foreign Military Sales programme, specifically benefiting Poland.

Poland was the first international customer for LTAMDS, incorporating 12 radars into its WISLA Phase 2 programme alongside 48 Patriot launchers. The LTAMDS is designed to detect and combat various threats, including aircraft, cruise, and ballistic missiles.

This collaboration underscores strengthening military ties between the US and its NATO ally, Poland.

The contract also includes research, development, test, and evaluation components funded by the Army. The Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, is managing the contracting process, ensuring that the project aligns with the Army's objectives.

Raytheon has delivered the first Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) to the US Army. This 360-degree radar system, which uses Gallium Nitride technology to enhance signal strength and sensitivity, underwent testing at White Sands Missile Range before being integrated into the Army’s defence system.

According to GlobalData’s “The Global Missiles & Missile Defense Systems Market 2023-2033” report, Raytheon Technologies Corp. is projected to be the second largest shareholder in the region. With 22% of the North American missiles and missile defence systems market, it is the second largest shareholder in the region.
