Poland to buy ground control approach systems from US

The deal also includes AN/UPX interrogators, precision navigation systems, radio navigation equipment and more.

Upasana Mukherjee November 04 2024

The US State Department has approved a potential foreign military sale to Poland, aimed at enhancing the European nation's air traffic control capabilities.

The sale, which involves mobile ground control approach (GCA-2000) systems that consist of ultra-high frequency radios and related logistics, is estimated to cost $105m (418m zlotys).

The Defence Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress of the possible sale.

Poland has also requested to buy AN/UPX interrogators, precision navigation systems, radio navigation equipment, test equipment, spare parts, consumables, warranties, and extensive training and support services.

The sale is seen as a move to support the stability and security of a NATO ally, contributing to the broader objectives of political and economic equilibrium in Europe.

It is anticipated that the integration of these systems will enhance Poland's ability to address both current and future threats, aligning with international aviation service standards and reinforcing its commitment to NATO's collective security.

The implementation of these systems into the Polish armed forces is expected to be seamless, with no anticipated difficulties.

Moreover, the sale is not expected to disrupt the existing military balance within the region.

L3Harris based in Melbourne has been named as the principal contractor for this transaction.

This deal follows a previous agreement from 2023, where the US State Department agreed a $255m foreign military sale of communications equipment to Poland.

That deal, also facilitated by L3Harris Technologies, was designed to upgrade the Polish military's communications infrastructure with advanced radio systems.
