Northrop Grumman has unveiled a new medium calibre chain gun, M230 Link Fed (M230LF) Dual Feed Bushmaster, for enhanced flexibility and threat response on the battlefield.

This next-generation 30x113mm chain gun is designed to counter both uncrewed aerial threats (C-UAS) and ground engagements.

Northrop stated that the gun is currently at Technology Readiness Level 6 and is poised for live fire demonstrations scheduled for early 2025.

The M230LF Dual Feed Bushmaster is the first of its kind to offer two ammunition feed paths, allowing operators to switch between different types of ammunition without the need for mixed belts.

The dual feed capability enhances mission flexibility by enabling the use of XM1211 proximity fused rounds for C-UAS and XM1198 high explosive, dual purpose rounds for anti-armour operations.

The Bushmaster’s ability to instantly switch between ammunition paths provides operators with the agility to adapt to changing battlefield conditions.

This dual feed system not only saves time but also reduces logistical burdens, allowing for more engagements before the need to reload.

For users of the existing single feed M230LF, the new Bushmaster offers a seamless transition with a similar weight profile and 60% part commonality. This design consideration promotes faster routine repairs and minimises maintenance downtime.

The company said it will continue to produce the single feed M230LF to cater to customers with that preference.

Northrop Grumman armament systems vice-president Dave Fine said: “The M230LF Dual Feed Bushmaster Chain Gun offers new flexibility by switching between ammunition paths using dual-feed technology.

“Using advanced technology combined with five decades of battle-proven experience, this next-generation cannon will empower operators to quickly respond to threats. This chain gun is the latest in our Bushmaster line to deliver reliable, multi-mission capabilities addressing the evolving threat environment.”

In August 2024, Northrop revealed a major part of their solution to the US Army’s Improved Threat Detection System (ITDS) programme.

The solution will feature the Advanced Tactical Hostile Engagement Awareness (ATHENA), a next-generation missile warning sensor.
