The Nato Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has awarded Saab, a global defence and security company, a contract to supply its Carl-Gustaf weapon system.
The deal, valued at €60m ($64.8m) and which runs from 2024 to 2027, underscores Nato's commitment to enhancing operational readiness across member nations.
Görgen Johansson, the head of Saab's business area Dynamics, expressed gratitude for the NSPA's continued trust in the Carl-Gustaf system. "We are honoured that the NSPA once again has chosen our trusted, reliable, and effective Carl-Gustaf system," Johansson remarked, highlighting the system's track record in delivering operational success on the battlefield.
Saab, the Swedish defence company, continues to expand its global presence and secure contracts for its Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon system. Customers include Australia, Latvia, Lithuania, Japan, the US, and the UK. Saab's sales of the Carl-Gustaf system surpassed $500m in 2023. This year, Saab secured a $1.3bn contract with Poland for Carl-Gustaf systems.
The significance of the Carl-Gustaf system lies in its versatility and adaptability to diverse mission requirements. With a wide array of ammunition types, the Carl-Gustaf empowers soldiers with the flexibility to engage armoured vehicles and fortified structures, and it even illuminates the battlefield during nocturnal operations. This flexibility ensures that NATO forces are equipped to confront evolving threats across various operational environments, enhancing their effectiveness and survivability in the field.
Moreover, the procurement agreement extends beyond mere equipment acquisition, encompassing a framework that includes ammunition and supplementary gear. This approach reveals Nato's commitment to equipping its member nations with a suite of capabilities to effectively address contemporary security challenges.
The Carl-Gustaf system has widespread adoption, with more than 40 countries worldwide relying on its firepower to safeguard national interests. As Nato adapts to emerging threats and operational requirements, investments in weaponry like the Carl-Gustaf reaffirm the alliance's resolve to maintain a robust defence posture and ensure collective security in an ever-changing global landscape.
In March 2024, Saab AB began constructing its new Carl-Gustaf manufacturing plant in Jhajjar, India. This move entails the establishment of Saab FFVO In, a new entity dedicated to building the first Carl-Gustaf M4 manufacturing facility outside of Sweden. The facility will utilise technologies to produce the Carl-Gustaf M4 grenade launcher for the Indian army.
