Leonardo DRS and BlueHalo have demonstrated a new Stryker-based counter-uncrewed aircraft system (C-UAS) Directed Energy (DE) prototype during a live-fire engagement.
The system is designed to defeat Group 1-3 UAS with multiple kinetic and non-kinetic defeat technologies.
The demonstration for US Army officials took place last month in Socorro, New Mexico, where the mobile C-UAS DE Stryker successfully engaged and destroyed numerous drones.
The system also demonstrated its capability to handle near-simultaneous air and ground threats with its laser and a 30mm remote weapon station.
The C-UAS DE Stryker brings together solutions from Leonardo DRS, BlueHalo, and other industry partners such as AMPEX, Arnold Defense, BAE Systems, Digital Systems Engineering, EOS Defense Systems USA, and Northrop Grumman.
Leonardo DRS Land Systems senior vice-president and general manager Aaron Hankins said: “In just eight months, Leonardo DRS and our outstanding industry partners designed, built, and tested this Stryker-based Directed Energy Counter-UAS prototype.
“Our C-UAS Directed Energy Stryker is a future capability available to warfighters today, and we’re excited to display it during the 2024 AUSA Annual meeting.”
The Stryker's primary kinetic effectors include EOS Defense Systems' R400 30mm RWS with Northrop Grumman's XM914 cannon and BAE Systems' Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System.
The system's non-kinetic capabilities feature BlueHalo's LOCUST Laser Weapon System, which is deployed from within the Stryker to neutralise aerial threats.
This 26kW laser weapon system is designed for precision and is complemented by BlueHalo's Titan C-UAS and Titan-SV technologies for comprehensive surveillance and drone threat mitigation.
Designed to provide soldiers with enhanced mobility, firepower, and protection, the C-UAS DE Stryker is fully integrated with the US Army's Forward Area Air Defense Command and Control network. This ensures interoperability with other Air Defense systems.
BlueHalo portfolio president and corporate executive vice-president Mary Clum said: “BlueHalo’s LOCUST Laser Weapon System is operationally deployed, proven, and trusted. Its modularity and ease of integration across platforms makes it a great fit for the Stryker armoured vehicle.”
In September 2024, Leonardo DRS delivered critical C5I capabilities for the Australian Army’s Heavy Armoured Capability Systems.
