The US State Department has approved a possible foreign military sale of ultra high-frequency (UHF) satellite communications (SATCOM) radio systems and related equipment to the Nato Communications and Information Agency (NCIA).

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified US Congress about this possible sale, which is expected to be valued at around $65m.

The move comes after NCIA, Nato’s technology and cyber hub, placed a request to purchase 517 AN/PRC-158 Manpack UHF SATCOM radio systems.

Additionally, the deal will include crypto fill devices, man-portable ancillaries, vehicular ancillaries, deployed headquarter ancillaries, power support, and operator and maintenance training, and other related elements of programme, technical and logistics support.

Delivery of the systems will provide Nato troops with access to the latest command, control, communications and intelligence (C3I) systems and technologies, interoperable with US counterparts.

The radio systems will help in improving communication effectiveness at all echelons and will facilitate decision-making.

In a statement, DSCA said: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of Nato allies and partner nations that are an important force for ensuring peace and stability in Europe.”

Collins Aerospace will be the primary contractor for the deal.

In December, the US State Department approved a possible $132.2m foreign military sale of 155mm ammunition and accessories to Australia.

The department also approved a possible $280m foreign military sale of a Field Information Communications System (FICS) and related equipment to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO).
