The move comes after US President Joe Biden authorised the military assistance.

According to the US Department of Defense (DoD) statement, the assistance will include anti-armour, body-armour, small arms, various munitions, and military equipment from DoD inventories.

The latest military aid marks the third time in recent months that President Biden used the Presidential Drawdown Authority to facilitate emergency security assistance for Ukraine.

In total, the US has approved more than $1bn in security assistance over the last year.

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said: “We, along with our allies and partners, are standing together to continue to expedite security assistance to Ukraine, and are employing all available security cooperation tools in support of the Ukrainian people as they defend themselves against this aggression.”

“So, our commitments and deliveries continue as a sign of our unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Several Nato allies have also announced military support for Ukraine, in addition to providing financial and humanitarian assistance.

According to a Nato statement, thousands of anti-tank weapons and hundreds of air-defence missiles, as well as small arms and ammunition stocks, are being sent to the country.

Germany is sending approximately 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 Stinger surface-to-air missiles while France is supplying defensive military equipment.

The Dutch Government has confirmed that it is sending 200 Stinger missiles to Ukraine.

Another Nato member, Belgium, has committed 2,000 machine guns and 3,800 tonnes of fuel in support of Ukraine’s defence.
