US-based company SRI International has announced that it is leading security research for the US Army Research Lab initiative to develop and secure the Internet of Battlefield Things (IoBT).
Known as the ‘Alliance for IoBT Research on Evolving Intelligent Goal-driven Networks (IoBT REIGN)’, the initiative received a funding of $25m from the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in October last year.
Led by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the study team also includes partners from ARL; Carnegie Mellon University; University of California, Berkeley; University of California, Los Angeles; University of Massachusetts; and University of Southern California.
The ARL funding will be used for the first five years of a potential ten-year research programme.
SRI International computer scientist and cryptographer Dr Tancrède Lepoint said: “Battlefields are by nature fast-paced adversarial environments, and security challenges arising from these cyber-physical environments will be addressed in every research task.”
In future, the IoBT will help connect soldiers with smart technology in armour, radios, weapons and other objects.

By GlobalDataThis will provide the army troops with ‘extra sensory’ perception, ensure situational awareness, provide predictive capabilities to fighters, improved risk assessment and develop shared insights.
The IoBT REIGN initiative has been designed to gather researchers in the fields of cyber-physical computing, information theory, security, cryptography, formal methods, machine learning, networking, control and cognitive science.
It will help understand and use the networked battlefield systems’ abilities in addition to developing an adaptable cyber network of ‘things’.
The IoBT system will be capable of evaluating ‘its available resources in real-time, be self-aware and in a continuous state of learning’, and bring together data from technology and humans using cognitive abilities.
