Spain has signed an agreement with the United States to strengthen its national defence by acquiring Lockheed Martin‘s Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) missiles.
This acquisition marks Spain as the 16th member of the PAC-3 user community.
The agreement, finalised 17 July 2024, in Madrid, symbolises a technological upgrade for Spain’s military and a reinforcement of the defence partnership between Spain and the United States.
Strengthening ties and defence with PAC-3
Spain’s decision to integrate the PAC-3 MSE into its defence system comes at a time of heightened global security concerns. Threats from tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, hypersonics, and aircraft are becoming more prevalent. The missile’s interception capabilities will enhance Spain’s defensive posture, providing a shield against these evolving threats.
“At Lockheed Martin, we’re devoted to helping our customers stay ahead of new, highly contested threats,” stated Brian Kubik, vice president of PAC-3 programmes at Lockheed Martin. “As the world’s most advanced air defence missile, PAC-3 will enhance Spain’s national defence capabilities and enhance their effectiveness in the 21st-century security battlespace.”
A strategic Spanish upgrade
By joining the PAC-3 user community, Spain ensures interoperability and shared technological advancements with other member nations.

By GlobalDataThis acquisition is also a testament to the defence relationship between Spain and the United States. Lockheed Martin has partnered with Spain’s defence industry for more than 20 years, providing technological support. The missile agreement further cements this partnership, promising continued collaboration.
The US Army has committed more than $10bn to procure PAC-3 missiles, with two orders placed on June 28, 2024, totalling $4.5bn and $5.27bn. Recent tests, including a successful launch from a German-modified Patriot M903 launcher in May 2023, highlight ongoing efforts to enhance integration and operational readiness across allied forces.
Looking ahead
As Spain integrates the missiles into its defence arsenal, the focus will shift to training and operational readiness. Ensuring that Spanish military personnel are well-versed in the operation and maintenance of these systems will be crucial for maximising their defensive potential. This process will involve joint training exercises and knowledge exchanges with other PAC-3 partner nations, enhancing Spain’s capabilities on a global scale.
