South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace has hosted the ‘Hanwha-Norway Industry Day’ at the NHO Conference in Oslo to deepen its defence cooperation with Norwegian industries.
The conference, held on 26 February 2025, was attended by industry representatives from Norway, such as Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace, Nammo, and more than 30 other Norwegian defence companies.
The event reflects Hanwha Aerospace’s dedication to expanding the bilateral partnership with Norway further and explore opportunities to enhance defence capabilities and cooperation.
The partnership between Hanwha Aerospace and Norway commenced in 2017 with a contract valued at approximately $2.4bn (Nkr10.08bn) for 24 K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers (SPH) and six K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicles.
This collaboration was extended with an additional contract in 2022 for four K9s and eight K10s, which were delivered to the Norwegian Armed Forces earlier this month.
Hanwha Aerospace PGM Division head Chae Hoon said: “Norway is one of our key partners in Europe, with whom we’ve established strong cooperation through K9 contracts and partnerships with premier defence companies in Norway.
“This event was dedicated to fostering relationships with Norwegian defence companies and exploring opportunities to enhance bilateral defence capabilities and cooperation.”
The conference saw the display of Chunmoo Multiple Rocket Launch System (MRLS) featuring long-range precision fire capabilities.
This 239mm multiple rocket launcher system, is the result of a collaboration between Hanwha Aerospace and the Agency for Defense Development.
It is seen as a potential catalyst for broader bilateral defence cooperation, offering benefits in delivery timelines and cost-effectiveness.
The system’s design enables it to be integrated with vehicles and launchers from other countries, as exemplified by the ‘HOMAR-K’ in Poland, which pairs Jelcz vehicles with Chunmoo launchers.
The Chunmoo system has the capacity to fire 40 rounds of 130mm ammunition, with ongoing development to support the European 122mm ammunition standard.
In Poland, the localised version of Chunmoo incorporates local command and communication systems from WB Group, demonstrating Hanwha’s commitment to collaborating with local industries in customer nations.
In 2020, Hanwha entered a contract for the supply of 288 Chunmoo Multiple Rocket Launcher Systems to Poland.
Earlier in February 2025, Hanwha Aerospace completed acceptance trials for its domestically produced 1,000-horsepower diesel engine, which is presumed for integration into the K9 SPH.
