Safran Electronics & Defense has finalised an agreement to provide its Geonyx Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) for the Finnish Defence Forces’ artillery systems.

The contract, value of which has not been disclosed, extends from 2024 to 2031.

The Geonyx INS, incorporating Safran’s HRG Crystal technology, is engineered for accurate navigation and artillery pointing, even in environments where global navigation satellite systems are compromised.

The new navigation and positioning technology’s compact design is designed for integration into a variety of military platforms, such as vehicles, mobile radars and artillery systems including howitzers, multiple rocket launchers, mortars, and light guns.

It further helps identify potential GPS signal reception threats and automatically halt GPS hybridisation when necessary.

This system is expected to boost the Finnish Defence Forces’ operational accuracy and mission readiness.

Safran has already delivered more than 1,000 Geonyx units around the globe.

According to a GlobalData report titled “Finland Defense Market 2023-2028”, Finland’s defence acquisitions are experiencing growth.

The report indicates the growth is projected to continue, albeit at a slower pace, with spending forecasted to increase to $4.8bn (€4.6bn) by 2028, at a compound annual growth rate of 10.9%.

In addition, earlier in February 2025, Bell Textron engaged Safran Defense & Space Inc (DSI) to provide testing solutions for the US Army’s Future Long Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) programme.

Safran DSI will supply a suite of in-flight and ground-based testing systems for six aircraft within the FLRAA programme’s scope.
