Romania has agreed to purchase Lockheed Martin’s Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) missiles and related support equipment from the US Government.

Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control will serve as the prime contractor to provide the PAC-3 MSE upgrade to the Patriot air defence system.

The improved PAC-3 MSE high-velocity interceptor has a dual-pulse solid rocket motor, control fins and actuators and it provides increased performance in altitude and range, Lockheed stated.

“We expect PAC-3 MSE interceptors to continue serving as an integral layer of defence.”

It uses hit-to-kill technology to counter incoming threats, including tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and aircraft.

Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Integrated Air and Missile Defense vice-president and deputy Scott Arnold said: “We’re honoured to partner with Romania on their efforts to protect and defend their armed forces, citizens and infrastructure.

“Today’s global security environment demands reliable solutions. We expect PAC-3 MSE interceptors to continue serving as an integral layer of defence.”

Romania has become the third international customer to purchase the PAC-3 MSE.

Poland, Germany, Sweden and Middle Eastern partner nations have expressed interest in acquiring the PAC-3 MSE to improve their missile defence capabilities.

Lockheed Martin’s missile defence solutions are claimed to protect citizens, critical assets and deployed forces from current and future threats.

The company is involved in missile design and production, in addition to providing command and control/battle management, communications, precision pointing and tracking optics, radar and signal processing, as well as threat-representative targets for missile defence tests.
