Rheinmetall has acquired Canadian robotics company Provectus Robotics Solutions through its subsidiary to strengthen its technological capabilities in robotics and autonomous driving.
Financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
Rheinmetall said the acquisition of the robotics company will deliver key benefits to its automotive and defence businesses.
The acquisition is consistent with the group’s strategy to expand its automation and digitisation capabilities to utilise future growth potential.
Rheinmetall Canada president and CEO Stéphane Oehrli said: “We have already been working closely with Provectus in our unmanned ground vehicle project. This vertical integration gives us a decisive advantage in the field of autonomous mobility technology.
“Since this capacity is also a key enabler for the automotive division, the whole Rheinmetall Group will hence benefit from Provectus’ expertise. The automation of other Rheinmetall mobile platforms is actually an innovation we are already thinking of.”

By GlobalDataEstablished in 2010, Provectus is involved in the development of advanced robotic systems and software.
The company will continue its business operations under its existing managing director Paul Rocco.
Rocco said: “Rheinmetall Canada is the ideal platform for accelerating our growth while simultaneously strengthening our presence in Canada, as well as internationally.
“This is a unique opportunity for the Provectus team to significantly improve our market potential in the world of autonomous driving and to take advantage of new opportunities.”
The group is aiming to utilise the expected demand for unmanned ground vehicles in future military operations on land. It believes that the buyout will further its position in the technology domain.
Rheinmetall’s military variant of the Mission Master unmanned multi-mission vehicle is based on technology provided by Provectus.
Furthermore, Rheinmetall Canada has plans to use Provectus’ expertise in delivering the Canadian Armed Forces’ intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) project.
The company was selected by the Canadian Government to serve as the prime contractor and provide the ISTAR in-service support services (ISS).
Rheinmetall also sees a greater role for the unmanned systems in unarmed logistic or reconnaissance duties or as mobile weapon platforms.
