Land systems manufacturer Otokar has submitted a ‘best and final offer’ (BAFO) for the serial production of the Altay main battle tank (MBT) project to the Turkish Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM).
Altay has been specifically designed and developed to address the requirements of the Turkish Land Forces against current and imminent threats.

Featuring enhanced survivability, mobility and firing power, the Altay MBT has demonstrated superior performance in challenging tests carried out in all climatic and terrain conditions for the past two years.
Otokar general manager Serdar Görgüç said: “We prepared a cost-effective, sound and viable proposal with minimum risk and submitted as our BAFO to SSM.
“The Otokar proposal was created within the scope of timely response to the urgent needs of the Turkish Armed Forces. Meanwhile, we worked on all the infrastructure requirements and planned the production lines to be prepared for launching production as early as possible with the signing of the agreement for Altay’s serial production, and obtained the necessary manufacturing permit from the Ministry of Defence.”
In 2008, Otokar secured the contract for the development, design, prototype and qualification processes of the Altay system.
In February last year, the prototypes produced during the first phase of the project were approved following a series of qualification and acceptance tests carried out on them.
The SSM released the call to bid document for the serial production and the integrated logistics support services of the Altay Main Battle Tank in July 2017.
The Turkey-based manufacturer submitted its first proposal for the tender on 16 November.
