North Korea has reportedly conducted a test-firing of an unidentified ‘ultramodern tactical weapon’.
According to Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the weapon trial was carried out in the presence of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at the testing ground of the Academy of Defense Science, which serves as the centre of weapons development in North Korea.
Details about the weapon or the type were not revealed.
A statement reported by KCNA was cited by The New York Times as saying that Kim visited the site and ‘supervised a newly developed ultramodern tactical weapon test’.
The news agency added: “After seeing the power of the tactical weapon, Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un was so excited to say that another great work was done by the defence scientists and munitions industrial workers to increase the defence capability of the country.”
The weapon test comes at a time when the nuclear talks between North Korea and the US have been stalled.
