Cubic Defense Applications has been awarded a contract for delivery of additional instrumentable multiple integrated laser engagement system (MILES) tactical vehicle systems (I-MILES TVS) to the US Army.

Awarded by the army’s Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI), the latest $12.5m order forms part of a second option of an indefinite-delivery indefinite-quantity (ID/IQ) contract secured by the company for I-MILES TVS deliveries in September 2010.

The first option under the original contract, which includes one base year and four option years, with an overall task value in excess of $100m, involves supply of more than 3,000 systems to the army.

I-MILES TVS is a latest generation tactical engagement simulation system designed to provide direct-fire, force-on-force and force-on target collective training to troops at home stations and manoeuvre combat training centres (CTC).

Equipped with a wireless independent target system (WITS), I-MILES uses laser emitters that attach to military weapons and on-body sensors to replicate combat and records for review later on.

Capable of providing real-time casualty assessment during training scenarios, the system replaces all basic MILES systems that are currently installed on non-turreted military vehicles.

Cubic has delivered an initial batch of more than 1,000 I-MILES TVS kits to the army under the first option in November, with majority taken up by the US Army Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC), located at Fort Polk in Louisiana, and the National Training Center (NTC) at Fort Irwin, California, US.

An initial six tactical vehicle systems are scheduled to be used in support of end-user training at Fort Carson in Colorado, US.

Manufacturing work under the new contract is scheduled to begin following completion of deliveries under the first option in May 2013.
