The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress of the possible sale of individual and crew-served weapons, equipment, training, and support to Afghanistan.
Under the estimated $60m foreign military sale, the Government of Afghanistan has requested major defence equipment (MDE), including 4,891 M16A4 5.56mm rifles, 485 M240B 7.62mm machine guns, and 800 M2 .50-calibre machine guns.
The sale package also covers non-MDE, such as M249 light automatic machine guns, M110 7.62mm sniper rifles, MK-19 40mm grenade launchers, MK-93 40mm machine gun mounts, M3 tripod machine gun mounts, and spare barrels.
The requested weapons and equipment are based on Afghanistan’s force structure and operational requirements, and will enhance its capabilities for ongoing counter-insurgency operations and enduring threats to its national sovereignty.
Spare and repair parts, technical documentation and training equipment will be provided, in addition to support services from the US Government, contractors and a quality assurance team.
The US support demonstrates a commitment to Afghanistan as its strategic partner, and is vital to regional security and stability amidst an ongoing insurgency.
