US President Donald J. Trump has announced a new strategy to address threats from South Asia in an effort to enhance security of the country and its allies and partners.
The new strategy, which will involve Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and the Central Asian nations, seeks to prevent Taliban from gaining foothold in Afghanistan and stop mass terror attacks against America.
The strategy is expected to be supported by Nato allies and global partners such as Australia who have already committed to provide additional troops and funding increases.
The US aims to stop the resurgence of terrorist safe havens in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Trump said: “Today, 20 US-designated foreign terrorist organisations are active in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the highest concentration in any region anywhere in the world.
“For its part, Pakistan often gives safe haven to agents of chaos, violence and terror. The threat is worse because Pakistan and India are two nuclear-armed states whose tense relations threaten to spiral into conflict. And that could happen.”
