The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has received the first of six Kodiak AEV 3 S armoured heavy-duty combat engineering vehicles from Rheinmetall Defence.
The delivery follows a €100m contract signed by the FMV with the company in January 2008 to support its Leopard 2 main battle tanks and supplement existing ARV 3 armoured recovery vehicles.
The AEV 3 S combat support vehicle, based on the Leopard 2, is equipped with a remote control weapon station and a smoke grenade launcher system for self-protection.
The vehicle is fitted with six cameras to provide the crew with a broad view of the surroundings, allowing the vehicle to perform various combat engineering tasks without jeopardising crew safety.
The array of equipment that can be installed on the vehicle enables it to be deployed in civil defence or disaster recovery roles as well as in joint civil-military operations.
The contract also includes orders for ten armoured engineering vehicles for the Dutch Army.
