Leopard 2 tank

Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract for the delivery of several thousand large-calibre ammunition rounds to the Hellenic Armed Forces.

Awarded by Germany’s Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-service Support (BAAINBw) on behalf of the Greek Ministry of Defence, Rheinmetall will supply 12,000 rounds of 120mm ammunition for the Greek Army’s Leopard 2 tanks.

Specifically, the €52m agreement covers the supply of 120mm DM12A2 multipurpose ammunition, as well as DM63 and DM63A1 kinetic energy (KE) rounds.

In addition, it includes the production and installation of ballistic tables for the KE ammunition in the Greek Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks.

The German and Greek defence ministries signed an agreement for the procurement earlier this year.

Having acquired Leopard tanks in 2009, Greece has been looking to purchase accompanying ammunition to re-equip the army’s tank forces.

"Rheinmetall will supply 12,000 rounds of 120mm ammunition."

Rheinmetall is already installing components that are locally produced by its Greek partner Hellenic Defence Systems (HDS) into the DM63A1, to ensure that the procurement programme produces local valued-added in the country.

The company is set to deliver the DM12A2 and DM63 to the Greek Army by the end of this year, as it seeks to address an immediate requirement.

Other deliveries of ammunition, namely the DM63A1, are expected to take place in three lots in 2015 and 2016, following the planned new qualification of the round next year.

Out of a total 353 Leopard 2 MBTs, 170 Leopard 2A6 HELs are armed with a long-barrel Rheinmetall L55 gun, while the remaining 183 Leopard 2A4 tanks feature the company’s short-barrel L44 model.
