Raytheon’s multi-spectral targeting system-B (MTS-B) has demonstrated its ground-based targets observation capabilities during the company-funded field trials at an undisclosed location.
The MTS-B EO sensor was also used by operators for observing terrorists, simulated by the company employees, planting a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) in real-time.
Mounted onboard the company’s joint land attack cruise missile defende elevated netted sensor (JLENS) system, the MTS-B electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor successfully tracked a wide range of surface targets, even in smoky conditions due to recent forest fires in the region.
Imagery captured by the MTS-B was subsequently passed through the JLENS tether, which allowed operators to view a live feed of trucks, trains and cars from longer ranges.
The JLENS system also simultaneously tracked ground targets using its integrated radar system during the testing, which demonstrated the potential for integration of JLENS radar and EO/IR payloads.
Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems business Global Integrated Sensors vice president Dave Gulla said the JLENS system already helped soldiers in detection and engagement of surface and airborne threats, such as swarming boats and anti-ship cruise missiles.

By GlobalData"Integrating the proven MTS-B on JLENS makes JLENS multi-mission capable and enables the warfighter to better defend the battlespace and protect critical infrastructure and waterways," Gulla said.
Based on an advanced digital architecture, the MTS-B is a multiuse EO/IR laser detecting-ranging-tracking set designed to permit long-range surveillance, target acquisition, tracking, range-finding and laser designation for the Hellfire missile and all tri-service and Nato laser-guided munitions.
The combat proven system helps intelligence analysts, soldiers and commanders make crucial operating decisions by constantly meeting increasing demand for actionable information in the battlefield.
Featuring two tethered 74m aerostats, the JLENS is an affordable elevated, persistent over-the-horizon sensor system designed for detection, tracking and engagement of hostile cruise missiles, low-flying manned and unmanned aircraft; as well as boats, mobile missile launchers, automobiles, trucks and tanks.
