QinetiQ has received a contract from BAE Systems to provide its E-X-Drive transmission systems for the technology development (TD) phase of the US Army’s Ground Combat Vehicle (GCV) programme.
The contract is awarded as part of the $449.9m 24 month TD phase contract of the US Army GCV programme secured by the BAE Systems Northrop Grumman team in August 2011.
Under the contract, the company will deliver several transmission systems to confirm demanding performance and durability targets, demonstrating the technology readiness for prototype builds for the engineering and manufacturing phase.
The E-X-Drive transmission is a key component of a hybrid electric drive propulsion system which minimises electrical demand, saves on vehicle fuel costs, improves reliability, provides higher dash speed and acceleration and increased on-board and off-board power.
E-X-Drive enables fundamental changes in vehicle configuration as the engine and transmission do not have to be connected mechanically enabling increased flexibility in the choice of power sources and their location, facilitating easy introduction of fuel cells and advanced battery / energy storage technologies.
The system offers improved acceleration, agility, fuel efficiency and maintainability as opposed to the systems currently used on other combat vehicles and enables exceptional force protection and mobility in a lower weight vehicle.
