The US has delivered 100 AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles (ASM) along with other weapons and ammunition to the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) to help the country counter terrorist threats.
The US Embassy in Baghdad said in a statement that the deliveries addressed a critical assessment of needs conducted jointly by Iraq and US security experts, and represent the latest in a series of critical supplies brought to Iraq.
The statement said: "Since mid-January, more than eleven million rounds of ammunition, thousands of machine guns, sniper rifles, M16s and M4 rifles, thousands of flares, grenades and other weapons have been delivered to the ISF.
"Additional deliveries are scheduled in coming weeks, pursuant to the US foreign military sales programme with attendant transparency and accountability measures."
Made in response to specific requests by the Iraqi Government, the deliveries are consistent with the US’ strategic framework agreement and long-term security partnership with Iraq, and are claimed to be pursuant to a holistic counter-terrorism policy incorporating political, economic and security measures.
The Iraqi military is currently battling threats from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a breakaway al-Qaeda group founded in the early years of the Iraq War, active in Iraq and Syria.
