The Israeli Defense Forces’ (IDF) Southern Command has deployed two new technological systems in a bid to detect and deflect the growing anti-tank missile threats in the Gaza Strip.

Southern Command Weapon and Technologies Department head major Nissan Mizrachi said the command has been looking for a means of detecting the missile’s launching site due to increased anti-tank missile threats in the region.

"The Gaza Strip region is primary and the need for technology emerged immediately after a children’s school bus was hit last year," Mizrachi added.

The systems, developed by Elbit Systems, enable early detection and warning of launched anti-tank missiles, and also provide measures for redirecting the incoming missile threats.

One of the new systems enables detection of laser-operated weapons and provides a 360 degree range of warning against potential threats both visually and using audio to the commander in the field.

The technology detects the direction of the threat and its type, and calculates where the missile will land, based on the direction and speed of the system, thereby helping a tank direct its fire towards the threat.

The second new implemented system is capable of redirecting the missile and its course using several different technologies, ensuring the vehicle carrying the system is safe, and provides wide-range defence by diverting attacks.

The Southern Command has also devised a new safe route for use by the communities in the area, which provides ultimate protection against anti-tank missiles.
