General Dynamics Land Systems has secured two contracts, worth a total $581m, to upgrade Abrams main battle tanks for the US Army.

As part of the contracts, the Abrams tanks will be upgraded from M1A2 system enhancement package version 3 (SEPv3) to a SEPv4 variant.

The contracts cover design, development and integration of multiple engineering changes into Abrams tanks produced at the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center in Lima, Ohio, US.

Under the first contract worth $311m, the tanks will receive SEPv4 upgrades, including commander’s primary sight, an improved gunner’s primary sight and improvements to sensors.

A total of seven prototype M1A2 SEPv4 tanks will be delivered to the army by General Dynamics Land Systems.

Work under this contract will be carried out in Sterling Heights, Michigan; Lima; Scranton, Pennsylvania; and Tallahassee, Florida.

Awarded by the US Army Tank Automotive Command, the second $270m contract requires the company to produce 45 Abrams M1A2 SEPv3 tanks.

Expected to begin later this year, the production of M1A2 SEPv3 tanks will be carried out in Lima, Scranton, Tallahassee and Anniston, Alabama, US.

Equipped with a 120mm M256 smooth bore cannon, the M1A2 Abrams can fire a variety of different rounds against armoured vehicles, personnel and even low-flying aircraft.

The tank’s heavy exterior armour is claimed to provide outstanding protection to its crew of four.
