The Finnish Defence Forces has signed a letter of intent (LoI) with Bittium Wireless for the purchase of new software-defined radios (SDR).

The LoI covers products from the Bittium Tough SDR Handheld and Bittium Tough SDR Vehicular ranges.

The radio purchase agreement between Bittium and the Finnish Defence Forces will be based on the approval from the Finnish Ministry of Defence.

If approved, the purchase deal will be valued at around €30m.

Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command Joint Systems Centre colonel Petri Lammi said: “The LoI is based on both the government resolution on securing the technological and industrial foundation of the Finnish defence, as well as on the technology strategy of the Finnish Defence Forces.

Under the terms of the LoI, Finnish Defence Forces will help Bittium in developing radio products with its own R&D investments.

The Finnish Defence Forces’ support involves ensuring that the products are suitable for their purposes and making preparations for the purchase of the products.

The new SDR products will be used to renew the Finnish Defence Forces’ existing stock of field radios with modern broadband data transfer radios to support the reformed combat doctrine, Bittium stated.

These tactical radios are compatible with Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network (TAC WIN) SDR-based system that is already in service with the Finnish Defence Forces.
