DEW Engineering and Development ULC has been awarded a contract amendment to supply mobile workspaces under the Canadian Department of National Defence’s (DND) medium support vehicle system (MSVS) project.

Under the $25m contract amendment, the company will manufacture and deliver an additional 99 shelters to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

The company also secured a $48.5m contract to equip 846 of the total 895 baseline shelters ordered by Canada under a $130m competitive contract in August 2009, with power generators, tools, work benches, and electronic and office equipment.

Public Works and Government Services minister Diane Finley said the contracts will help sustain more than 100 jobs in Ottawa and in Miramichi, New Brunswick.

"This is good news for our Canadian Armed Forces, for Canadian workers and for the Canadian economy," Finley said.

"The mobile shelters are used as command posts, meteorological and medical stations and workshops."

Canadian national defence minister Rob Nicholson said: "These kitted shelters will provide the additional space and resources required to enhance the Canadian Armed Forces’ ability to provide support to future missions both at home and abroad."

Production of additional shelters and equipment will be carried out at the company’s Canadian facilities, while deliveries of the kitted shelters are scheduled to commence in spring 2014, for planned completion in early 2017.

Initiated in June 2006, the MSVS project seeks the replacement and modernisation of the CAF’s existing ageing medium-weight trucks fleet, to help ensure the personnel have the ability to provide lift and logistical support on the ground, and getting people, equipment and supplies where they are most needed.
