The US Army has awarded a contract to BAE Systems to supply bar armour kits to protect ground vehicles from rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attacks.
Under the $42m contract, the company will produce L-ROD bar armour kits for the US Army’s TACOM Life-Cycle Management Command’s RG-31 and Cougar mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles.
The BAE-developed L-ROD bar armour kit is a modular system made of a lightweight aluminium alloy that provides protection from RPGs without adding significant additional weight or changing the vehicle’s operational capabilities.
The bar armour kit weighs less than half of comparable steel designs, simply bolts onto the vehicle without welding or cutting and is easily repairable.
Production work will be carried out at the BAE Systems facility in Austin.
