The US Army has awarded a contract to QinetiQ to deliver an additional 235 sniper-detection systems for deployed troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The shoulder-wearable acoustic targeting systems (Ears/SWATS) are sniper-detection systems that allow combat troops to quickly and precisely respond to hostile fire, asymmetric warfare or all-out engagement.
Soldiers equipped with Ears can promptly locate and eliminate the threat after only one gun shot. Over 1,500 systems are now operational with US military personnel.
The system features an acoustic sensor coupled with operator interfaces designed for individual soldiers, vehicles and fixed locations. The system provides information about the direction and distance of a gunshot without confusing surrounding sounds.
The delivery is part of the US Army’s Land Warrior programme, which is designed to enhance the soldier’s tactical awareness, lethality and survivability.
