The Russian Army has conducted trials of a new universal 9A53 multiple-launch rocket system (MLRS) named Tornado.
The new MLRS will replace the current Uragan and Smerch systems.
According to a Russian Army official, the military is looking for an artillery system with faster reloading times and simpler logistics than current systems. The military is therefore looking for a rocket system based on a new chassis, which will still be able to fire existing rocket types.
Russia’s GNPP Splav design bureau in Tula carried out the tests.
