Defence contractor EADS will provide the Korean Helicopter Programme’s (KHP) self-protection system with its Missile Launch Detection System (MILDS) missile warning sensor.
The sensors will be integrated by Korean company LIGNex1 into the KHP self-protection system.
MILDS AN/AAR-60 is an advanced, passive imaging sensor which detects and tracks the ultraviolet emissions of approaching missiles.
EADS says it is particularly effective against infrared-guided shoulder launched missiles.
The system provides full coverage, a low false alarm rate and maximum warning time to enable the deployment of countermeasures such as chaffs/flares.
The Korean armed forces are planning to acquire around 250 helicopters equipped with the system.
