State-run Indian firm Bharat Dynamics (BDL) has signed a contract with the Indian Army for Akash Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs).

The Rs140bn ($3.7bn) order comprises missiles, support equipment and services and is the highest value contract placed by the Indian Army to date.

The Akash SAM has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.

The weapon system, with a range of 25km, is capable of engaging targets in all weather conditions, according to Press Trust of India.

The Indian Air Force has also placed an order worth Rs10bn ($219m) for the air force version of the missile.
