L3Harris Technologies has secured a $300m contract from the US Army to supply thousands of next-generation Handheld, Manpack, and Small Form Fit (HMS) radios.

The firm fixed price contract is part of a larger tranche of multi-vendor indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contracts announced in 2016 by US Senator Chuck Schumer.

Schumer said: “The US Army has tuned to the right frequency and once again recognized what I have long known: that Rochester’s L3Harris is leading in cutting-edge radio technology innovation and its workforce is ready to help maintain American military excellence and keep our troops safe in the field.

“This $300m award is the latest in a series of defence contracts over the last decade that shows the US Army realises that L3Harris radios are essential to providing our warfighters a key tactical advantage on the battlefield.”

L3Harris Falcon IV Family of Radios are part of the Army’s HMS programme.

The radios are designed to support communications-on-the-move operations, which are said to be vital in defending national interests.

L3Harris initially secured a $3.9bn IDIQ handheld Leader radio contract in 2015 and a $12.7bn IDIQ Manpack radio contract in 2016.

In 2023, the US Army chose L3Harris to manufacture more than 4,000 HMS radios under a $196m contract.

This followed a 2022 contract with the Marine Corps worth up to $750m for Falcon IV Multi-Channel Hand Held radios, and a 2021 Army contract for Leader and Manpack radios valued at $345m.

L3Harris Communication Systems president Sam Mehta said: “Our Falcon IV family of radios, which are part of the Army’s HMS programme, deliver highly resilient capabilities that enable communications-on-the-move operations that are vital in defending our national interests against adversarial nations. We appreciate Senator Schumer’s continued support of New York’s high-technology workforce and in providing critical solutions that help protect the lives of American soldiers.”

Recently, L3Harris unveiled an integration of electronic warfare (EW) technology with its T7 robot, showcased at Vanguard 2024, a US Army event held at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

The upgraded T7, equipped with the CORVUS-RAVEN system, successfully detected and neutralised small uncrewed aircraft systems.

Additionally, the Individual CORVUS Node provided advanced capabilities to sense, monitor, and decode electronic signals.

L3Harris Robotics chief engineer Dr Paul Bosscher said: “The idea behind the innovation was to leverage unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) such as T7 and T4 to provide stand-off delivery of EW effects. This means robots could be deployed to sense and detect signals a few kilometres ahead of troops, keeping them out of harm’s way.”
