KRAS (Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems) has signed a $100m order with Rafael Advanced Defence Systems to manufacture 1,000 Barak 8 missile systems for the Indian Armed Forces.
KRAS is a joint venture between Israeli state-owned Rafael Advanced Defence Systems and Indian defence company Kalyani Strategic Systems with Rafael investing heavily in facilities and life-cycle support in India.
KRAS will hire an extra 300 personnel by 2023 in part to support further contracts.
The Barak 8 surface-to-air missile (SAM) is intended for use against a variety of threats including aircraft, UAVs and ballistic missiles. It was developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Israel’s Israel Aircraft Industry (IAI).

The Barak 8 missile system is used by the Indian, Israeli and Azerbaijani Armed Forces with the missile also being tested by the Polish Navy. The 4.5mlong missile can reach a speed of Mach two and comes in land and maritime variants.
Early versions of the missiles began flight tests 2010, with the Barak 8 being tested successfully tested in 2014.
Rafael Advanced Defence Systems has worked with Indian companies on multiple occasions leading to $250m of investment in India by the company.
