Israel’s Ministry of Defense is moving forward with the deployment of the Arrow 3 missile interception system on German soil in 2025 and has initiated joint preparations with the German Federal Ministry of Defence.

A meeting in relation to the preparations took place at Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), led by Israel Missile Defense Organization director Moshe Patel, within the Israeli Ministry of Defense.

The meeting has so far included discussions with Israeli defence industries such as IAI’s MLM Division, Elta, Elbit Systems, and Germany’s MBDA.

The ongoing two-day session is part of the execution of the Arrow 3 sale agreement to Germany.

Israel, with approval from the US, had agreed to sell the Arrow 3 system to Germany in a $3.5bn deal last year.

Demand for the missile defence systems extends beyond Germany. In May this year, several countries expressed interest in purchasing the technology.

The Arrow system, which includes the Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 interceptors, was developed through collaboration between Israel and the US to counter the threat of long-range ballistic missiles.

Operational since 2017, Arrow 3 serves as the upper-tier, exo-atmospheric interceptor in Israel’s tiered ballistic missile defence system, providing coverage over a larger defended area.

Arrow 3 is designed to neutralise long-range threats far from their intended targets, intercepting them outside the atmosphere and closer to their launch sites.

The system can share the same weapon system components – launchers, command and control, sensors, and other assets – with the lower-tier Arrow 2.

In November 2022, Israeli Air Defense Array soldiers executed the first-ever operational interception using the Arrow 3 system, neutralising a target launched towards Israel from the Red Sea region.

The system further demonstrated its capabilities against Iranian missile attacks on 14 April and 1 October this year.
