The Indian and US armies have commenced the joint military exercise Yudh Abhyas 2021 at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson in Alaska, US.
The 14-day bilateral exercise is designed to enable exchange of knowledge, ideas and concepts between the two militaries. It is focused on enhancing cohesion and interoperability.
The US troops participating in Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2021 include the First Squadron (Airborne) of the 40th Cavalry Regiment, US Army, and the Indian contingent is represented by 7th MADRAS Infantry Battalion Group.
A total of 300 US Army soldiers and 350 Indian Army soldiers are participating in the exercise.
The joint training exercise includes counter insurgency / counter terrorism environment activities under United Nations (UN) mandate.
In a statement, the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) noted that the exercise will enable both armies to improve situational awareness.

The 17th edition of the exercise is hosted alternately between both countries.
In February this year, a previous version of the exercise was conducted at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Bikaner, Rajasthan, India.
Since 2004, Exercise Yudh Abhyas has promoted cooperation between the two countries while sharing training, cultural exchanges and building joint operating skills.
In September 2018, the Indian and US armies commenced the joint military exercise Yudh Abhyas 2018 at Chaubattia in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.
Separately, the Indian MoD announced the conclusion of the 8th Edition of joint military exercise Mitra Shakti between the Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army.
