The military intelligence authorities involved in the legislation would include the Defence Command Finland and the Finnish Defence Forces Intelligence Agency.
The major focus of the proposal is to help support major political and military leaders in decision-making by providing information generated from monitoring developments in the security environment.
The new legislation proposed by the Finnish government would include provisions on the principles of intelligence activities, as well as the direction and oversight of intelligence operations in the defence administration.
If approved, the current proposal is expected to enhance the ability of the Finnish Defence Forces to gather intelligence on major international threats to the defence.
Military intelligence will also provide the defence forces with powers to conduct human, information system, radio signal and telecommunications intelligence.
The legislation is aimed at gathering military activities information, such as actions performed by foreign armed forces.
It also involves intelligence targeting Finland’s national defence, development and distribution of military supplies and action that may endanger the country.
