Boeing has secured a $240m contract from the US Army Special Operations Aviation Command (USASOAC) to remanufacture five more MH-47G Block II Chinook helicopters.
The latest order follows USASOAC’s acquisition of four MH-47G Block II aircraft in 2024.
in December 2023, Boeing was contracted for six of these new-generation units in a deal worth $271m.
With the latest award, the total number of MH-47G Block II aircraft under contract for the Army has risen to 51. The deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027.
Boeing anticipates that the entire USASOAC Chinook fleet will be completed by early 2030.
Boeing Defense Space & Security Cargo Programs vice president and programme manager Heather McBryan said: “Supporting the needs of our special operators continues to be critically important.
“USASOAC has unique and complex mission requirements, so it’s vital we provide the enhanced capabilities of the MH-47G Block II as quickly as possible.”
The MH-47G Block II variant is a heavy-lift helicopter that is expected to enhance the global reach of USASOAC’s capabilities.
It features a reinforced airframe, redesigned fuel tanks, new avionics, as well as a design that allows for future affordable modernisation efforts.
The improved structure and weight reduction initiatives of the MH-47G Block II Chinook increase the aircraft’s performance and efficiency.
These enhancements enable extended lift and range capabilities.
The helicopter’s tandem rotor design offers stability and control, agility, and ease of loading and unloading. It is capable of flying at altitudes of up to 20,000ft.
Boeing said that the H-47 Chinook programme supports more than 20,000 jobs and 360 suppliers across 40 states.
The company also noted that there are 950 Chinooks in operation across 20 countries.
Earlier in Marh 2025, the British Army and Defence Equipment & Support officially accepted the 50th AH-64E Apache helicopter at Boeing’s Mesa manufacturing facility in Arizona, US.
